Reviews: Thea Skin Care

I am really excited to be trying some samples from one of my chosen companies for skin care - Thea skin care.

They have gotten back to me via email quite promptly, I might add, and are sending me some samples of their products to try shortly.

I am very excited to say the least :) A few things excite me about Thea skin care's products;

1. They cater to women, men and babies - so your whole family can use Thea skin care's product range.
2. They are organic.
3. They do wedding favours!!! Who knew!

How awesome and cute are these?!

4. Their PR team are lovely. You can tell a LOT about a company by how their PR staff treat you!

I will keep you updated on what samples I have been sent as I am not really sure myself yet which samples I will be trying.

Top 10 Budget Saving Tips

Weddings are expensive, but you don't have to spend a fortune.

These top 10 tips are sure to save you money where you can:

  1. Book your venue out of season. The most popular months to get married are from May until September. You can save yourself a fortune by having a wedding in November, December, January or February.
  2. Check the 'Special Offers' or package deals your chosen venue has on their website or enquire over the phone. Sometimes venues have dates with no marriages on that particular day so they will offer a good deal or rate for certain dates they can't fill. Often, these dates are within a month, a month away or only a couple of months away. So be ready with your invites!
  3. Limit your numbers. Cut down your guest-list to minimise costs.
  4. Keep an eye out for good deals, offers and sales. You can save a lot of money by waiting for a good deal. I got my wedding dress for £525 rather than £975 because it was in the sale.
  5.  DIY - By hiring a village hall and decorating the venue yourself can save you a lot of money. The price to hire out a hall is normally less than £500 and most of them come with a bar and chairs. Make your invitations yourself, do your own makeup, your bouquets, buttonholes, invitations etc.
  6. Consider asking friends and family to help contribute to the cost of their suits or dresses.
  7. Have your wedding day on a week day. Saturday's, Sunday's and Friday's tend to be the most popular days, as it means that people do not have to take time off work, so they tend to be more expensive than say on a Monday.
  8. Use whoever you can to help. Are any of your friends or family members good at making cakes?are they good photographers? Can someone do your hair for you?
  9. Haggle on everything. The worst the company can say is 'No' and just by asking a simple question like "Is that the best possible price you can give?" can save you as much money as you are able to haggle their socks off for! Trust me, these companies are used to haggling, they probably do it to their own suppliers and vice versa all the time. Business is business after all!
  10. Sometimes package deals are really great value. Some come with added extras such as toastmasters, dj's, wedding cakes, chair sashes and covers, photographers - all of which can sometimes work out cheaper than booking them separately. Another tip is to use the venues' suppliers as quite a lot of the time they give reduced rates to couples that have booked the venue. Just make sure you compare the current prices of other companies and make sure you are getting the best possible deal.

Budget Brides: Wedding Cakes under £200 from Marks & Spencer

I was browsing through Marks & Spencers wedding range on their website and came across their wedding cakes.

I have to say a lot of money is to be saved if you can buy your own wedding cake decorations.

I couldn't believe this when I saw it. You can get a three tier wedding cake for between £8 -  £56, with a choice of either fruit or sponge cake from Marks and Spencers.

You could save yourself a fortune by decorating this cake yourself. Go to the website and see how many portions you will need to feed your guests. What I like about this particular cake is that you can customise each tier to your own preferences and budget.

The reviews are also good scoring 4 and a half out of 5 from over 800 reviews.

Are wedding cakes not your thing? How about having cupcakes already decorated and iced for you  at 48 cupcakes for £48? that is £1 per cake and is a very affordable option.

M & S offer a cake taster package where you can sample what each type of cake tastes like for £6 to help you make up your mind!

How about this 2 tier purple flower cake?At £75 and feeding 90 people it is great value and also comes already iced and decorated!

There is a good range of wedding cakes available for under £200 from Marks & Spencers, see them all here.

Planning my wedding: Update 1

My Planning updates will be dedicated to all recent news; wedding and blog related.
They will be updated as and when I can or when things have happened of importance or significance, otherwise this blog could get really boring! In between my planning blogs will be posts about reviews, real brides, inspiration and budget wedding ideas, so please do bookmark me for future reference!

Right so now I have a general idea of things that we like and what we want at our wedding, we still have no clue about venues though. If you are reading this and know any venues in Staffordshire around the £2,000 mark please post a comment!

We're really struggling to find one that we both go 'wow' to, maybe we are setting our heights too high for £2,000 but it is all we can afford to save in two years - we are aiming to get married in 2014. Our entire budget will be about £4,000 I reckon, so we need to get everything else with £2,000 and I am slowly finding out that 'everything else' costs a fortune. This is why I am determined to stick to a budget and find me some bargains, which I will also share with you as and when I find them.

So some big news is that I have actually bought my dream dress now!

If you remember from my wedding dress try on's I absolutely adored the Phil Collins 'Rose' PC1925 dress? Well 2 weekends ago I bought it. We were walking back from a meal one night past the shop that I saw it in. I looked in the window and there it was! My sister noticed it first and then looked over at me, I knew straight away that it was my dream dress. And then I saw a sale tag. I tell you, my reaction was somewhat bizarre because apparently I turned grey, but trying to keep in a squeal that was bursting out of me and trying to keep all of my emotions resulted in an inward glass case of emotion meltdown. My face was a bit like this apparently!!:

Best. Photo. Ever.
The very next day, we went down to buy the dress. It was £975 back in April but the tag said £525, it was also a size 12 but with it being a lace up we could get away with some alterations. I am a 10 so it was only one size too big. The ladies in there are really lovely and talked me through everything.

I asked to try on the dress again just to be 100% sure and as soon as I did I just knew.
I took some more photos of me in it.

Here they are:

The Photo's just don't do it justice, it sparkles from head to toe but without being too much bling. I am wearing heels in the above photo so I would have to have it taken in a bit at the bottom as I was planning on wearing flats. My fiance is about 3 inches taller than me, so I don't want to make him look short! bless.

Here it is from the back, the train is stunning. She showed me how it would bustle up for the evening and it was just wow (my sister didn't take a photo of it though, doh).

This is the dress without heels (below), I forgot to ask her how much it costs to have alterations so I'm budgeting about £100. It is an area I will have to look into in more detail a bit nearer the time, as I can have it altered up to 2 months before the wedding.

This was me the first time I tried it on:

And this one without the jacket:

My mum and dad kindly offered to put £400 toward my dress that they had been saving up which was just amazingly generous, which meant I only had to spend £125 on my dress, if I account that into my budget, considering I was planning on spending a bit more than that - I've saved quite a bit already!

What else have I been doing/planning...

I have currently been emailing some companies to start my 'Review' section up on this blog. The reason I chose to review products is because I thought 'how are we supposed to know what products to buy for the biggest moment of our lives when there are so many to choose from? How can we afford to know which products are the best in terms of value and in results without spending a small fortune trying these products?'

So with my marketing hat on, I thought what if I be a guinea pig and try all of these products out and then Review it from a 'real bride's perspective'?

You benefit, I benefit and if you like the look of their products, then the company benefits. It felt like a bit of a no-brainer to do this actually.

The difference between my blog reviews and others you may have read is that I find a lot of reviews tend to sound like Mark's & Spencer's adverts "This isn't just any ordinary pencil, this is a Mark's and Spencer's HB pencil" - yes you know the ones. I will tell you what I think honestly, but tactfully. After all, I have hand-picked all of the companies I have chosen to review because I liked something about them.

Plus I get to really girl out and try loads of amazing creams and lotions and share my experience with you ladies :D

I have to say, I don't think I have ever been this girly in my life, but as of late I have become fascinated with make up and creams. The only makeup I ever wear is eye liner and mascara and on the odd occasions that I go out (we're saving for a Wedding now after all), I put on my 'smokey eye' makeup, so I have never really experimented all that much with it.

And another thing, which some of you might think is quite shocking, I have never had a manicure or a pedicure or a facial in my life.

When I was a young girl I used to enjoy climbing trees and making dens, I loved animals and would regularly talk to worms and snails (true story), I loved learning about computers and technology. I spent more time outdoors than inside, until I discovered Xbox.  I am a female gamer, and I mean the good games, COD, GOW, Fallout 3/new vegas. Are you building up a picture of me yet?

But lately, I have really enjoyed trying all of this girl stuff out. So you're not going to have me talking about the enzymes or cucumber extracts or PH's etc (I will refer you to their website for that information). I don't understand about all of that. All I, and most likely, YOU care about is if it smells good, feels good, looks good, tastes good (if edible) and in ordinary, every day, normal, descriptive words.

So, the first company I have contacted called Thea Skincare have gotten back to me and I am being sent some samples of their products. Once I've tested them I will write a review of what I thought of them. Keep checking back for updates on that or subscribe to my blog (link on right hand navigation bar). Let me know if you can suggest any companies you think I should try - here are the categories I have chosen: Reviews.

I will post any more bargains I find as I go along.

We can do this ladies!

Beautiful and romantic vintage Invitations

I have a few files on my computer of pictures I have found on the Internet, these are in my file called 'invitation ideas'.
Unfortunately I haven't noted down the website addresses of these photos but they are so beautiful I wanted to share them with you.

If you own any of these photographs or know who do, please get in touch with me and I will happily correctly source the picture to your website. Thank you.

I love the red and black colours together against the ivory. This is probably because they are my chosen wedding colours, but I would love to recreate something like this. I am going to try and hand-make all of my invitations but I am not sure it would be up to this standard! It reminds me for some reason of old-style Hollywood - the Marilyn Monroe years. I feel that could be due to the vintage brooch on the front giving it sparkle, charm and sophistication.

These are similar in design and style, as I don't know what website they have come from I don't know if it is the same company just in a few variations of colours. I also have this one in a lilac/pink:

If these aren't floating your boat too much what about some of these:

Sorry about the quality of these photos, they were the only copies I had, but you get the idea.

So very lush :)

New Brides: So you're engaged, now what?

Not to make you panic, but a lot of time and preparation goes into a planning wedding.

This is why wedding planners can charge as much as they do, they get all of YOUR stress, all you have to do is point and give a bit of direction. This is why they are a very worthy investment!

They take care of everything including suppliers, advice, ideas and some even be a 'toastmaster' on your day!

Should your budget not stretch to getting a wedding planner (like mine!) and you are planning to do a DIY wedding, then here are some tips to help you along your way.

Gorgeous DIY Wedding Planner from amysboutique.co.uk

I found most of this information in magazines actually, some are pricey but well worth it in terms of content.

Right, the very first thing to do, is figure out your guest list, because quite a considerable amount of your money and the style of your wedding will depend on this.

I say style, because if you are fancying having a sit down meal at a manor house that only caters for up to 80 people, your guestlist of 150 people won't work. So your original style of having it in a manor house (picture vintage cars and the like) probably won't happen. (Unless of course you find another manor house that does). My point is, once you have a guest list, you can see how many people you are catering for so you will know what capacity of venues to look at. Next, your budget. Establish early on how much you can actually spend from now until your chosen date.

After you have chosen your guestlist and your budget and know roughly how many people you would like to invite then you can start looking at different venues in your area.

One thing I didn't realise before becoming a bride-to-be, is how many types of venues there are!

I had it in my head for some reason that it was either a church or a registry office, but there are so many different kinds; manor houses, country cottages/houses, barns, farms, fields, castles, hotels, museums, even! I think it was at this point that I really started enjoying planning a wedding.

Also, you don't need to be restricted to your area, lots of brides actually elope and get married abroad!

I still have no clue what kind of venue is right for me and my husband-to-be and I have been looking for 3 months now religiously. I have bought my dress before picking the venue, but that was because it was on sale and about to be discontinued :) As you can see, rules are sometimes made to be broken and sometimes with weddings, anything goes! What I am giving you is what I call 'the recommended way to do things'!

So, guestlist, budget, venue, pick your date, confirm your date with the venue, book your registrar as soon as possible (they are the people that make it so that you are legally married, it's quite important to have them there). Your venue will help dictate to you your 'theme'. Don't worry, I didn't know what one of those were either. A theme can be colour schemes, subject-related (movies / favourite football teams etc), era-related, it can be anything you want it to be really. Visit my inspiration page for more info, I'll be adding more as I find it too to help.

And then after that, the list just keeps getting bigger and bigger :)

  • Guest List.
  • Budget.
  • Venue.
  • Theme.
  • The wedding breakfast/buffet menu.
  • Wedding dress.
  • Wedding shoes.

You might want to rethink your budget?

I actually still feel like I am missing a few...care to highlight them for me?

Don't worry if that list scares you, it did me too writing it and reading it back, there is a lot to do, but you are more than capable. The trick is to concentrate on one thing at a time and before you know it you will be his mrs :)
